Political Leanings

As a candidate in a nonpartisan School Board election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party.  How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I am A-political and as such, I am running for a non-partisan position focused on education.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I have had the opportunity to lead several organizations, where I had to find common ground, work within a defined budget, and represent several equity stakeholders. This experience can serve D-12 parents, students and community members well as the Board makes key decisions related to education, budgets, and policy.

My vision is simple, to maintain District 12 as the number 1 school district in the State and ensure our students can learn in a safe environment. I am blessed to be at a point in my career where I can invest in our future.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  What would you maintain or change?

It is hard to make improvements and change when the district is already the number 1 in the entire State of Colorado, however I am eager to learn and help the district continue to be number 1.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, if any, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

Innovation and technology have to be a priority in order to keep our kids relevant for the future workforce.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

District 12 is unique in that it is one of the lowest funded schools in the state of Colorado. Therefore, doing more with less is a key component to financial stewardship, especially when hiring and retaining top talent. We have to pay teachers their value, give students the best education we can give them and represent as many parents & tax payers as we can.

Technology

What do you believe is the proper balance of a student’s use of technology in education  —  such as cell phone use during school hours and incorporating artificial intelligence?

Technology should used to add value to students’ education and not serve as a distractor to teachers or students.

Artificial Intelligence is already a key component in our daily lives, and it benefits students that know how to use it. The American workforce is at an inflection point, and it is our duty to ensure our students graduate with the skills necessary to join the evolving workforce.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

As a father, I trust that educators with the commensurate education and credentials are putting my kids best intentions at their forefront, however just like any industry, I know there can be radical opinions and ideologies. In this case, parents should be able to rely on trustworthy administration and staff to take appropriate actions and inform parents accordingly. And as a school board member, I would ensure that we have trustworthy administration and ensure accountability is upheld.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-in or -out policies?

This question is not appropriate for a non-partisan position. However, from my interviews with current school board members, it is my understanding that these types of policies are driven upon the district from state and federal levels. Therefore, as a D12 school board member, my duty would be to represent students & parents, as well as the district tax payers.

Gender Issues

What are your views on gender issues in schools, including the use of preferred pronouns, discussing gender issues in the classroom, allowing students to use facilities and participate in sports activities not of their biological gender, and compliance with federal directives and law regarding gender issues?

This question is not appropriate for a non-partisan position. However, from my interviews with current school board members, it is my understanding that these types of policies are driven upon the district from state and federal levels. School Safety

As a School Board member, what changes would you want to make, if any, to help ensure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

As a former member of our Armed Forces, student safety is a top concern. Students should feel safe at school, and parents should feel confident when they leave their kids at school.

School Board Meetings

What do you consider to be the appropriate balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

I feel that school board meetings are the appropriate venue for parents and concerned citizens to respectfully voice their issues and concerns.

Political Leanings

As a candidate in a nonpartisan School Board election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party.  How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

My political philosophy began germinating during my early years, having been born and raised in the totalitarian USSR. As a result, I unconditionally embrace conservative principles of limited government, local control, and both economic and religious freedom. My fiscal conservatism is deeply rooted in a firm belief in capitalism and a full understanding of the economic principles that underlie it. This conviction is reinforced by my direct experience witnessing the failure of socialism and the success of capitalism. My social conservatism developed later, after I became a wife and mother, and I now fully subscribe to the principles of the nuclear family, the sanctity of life from conception, and individual choice in medical care.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I have over 30 years of professional experience in banking, corporate finance, and corporate board service. I hold both an MBA and a CPA (CO). My educational experience includes serving as adjunct faculty at UCCS, and most recently, for the past 4 years, working as a substitute teacher in Cheyenne Mountain District 12 (“CMSD”). My financial acumen will be of service to the district with its $75 million budget. My corporate governance experience will also aid in the effective functioning of the board. My vision for the district is to maintain and further improve the level of excellence in education that has made it the top district in the State of Colorado.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  What would you maintain or change?

CMSD is the top-performing district in Colorado, and my first priority will be to maintain this excellence. However, despite this distinction, our students show only 66% proficiency in language arts at grade level and 60% in math. I will work with other board members and the superintendent to identify the reasons for this and determine paths to improve educational outcomes.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, if any, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

I firmly believe that school curriculum should focus on the fundamentals: reading and writing skills, foundational math, and sciences. School library collections should balance classical literature with contemporary youth fiction. All library and classroom materials, including non-fiction books and handouts, must be age appropriate.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

CMSD currently spends 59% of its budget on direct educational expenses, which is in line with the state average. Overall, the district currently spends $15,307 per student, slightly higher than the Colorado state average. CMSD also has the highest mill levy rate among all school districts in El Paso County. While much larger districts in the county have reduced their mill levy over the last 6 years by as much as 29%, CMSD’s rate has remained constant. Further evaluation of the budget is warranted to ensure prudent management of taxpayer funds, and my financial background will be very helpful in this task.

Technology

What do you believe is the proper balance of a student’s use of technology in education  —  such as cell phone use during school hours and incorporating artificial intelligence?

Technology has been an effective aid in education, but it has limitations. As we learned during the remote learning experiment, there is no substitute for in-person learning, which allows teachers to gauge students’ non-verbal cues of comprehension. This greatly improves the effectiveness of instruction. Furthermore, productive classroom management without distractions is paramount for maximum absorption of material, especially given the attention challenges inherent to students’ age and maturity levels.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

Parents hold the ultimate responsibility for their children and authority over what their children are exposed to. School personnel and board members should view parents as senior partners in the development of children. No information should be withheld from parents, with one notable exception: if a teacher, as a mandatory reporter, suspects child abuse by a parent, the teacher must follow the legally prescribed reporting process.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-in or -out policies?

Since my own days in high school, I have witnessed the progression of what was originally called “health education,” which once covered a wide range of health topics, into a curriculum now overly focused on material I do not view as age-appropriate. A teacherwho is almost always an unrelated adultdiscussing topics of sexual relations is fraught with potential for abuse. I would prefer health education emphasize abstinence and include a broad curriculum covering all areas of healthy living.

Gender Issues

What are your views on gender issues in schools, including the use of preferred pronouns, discussing gender issues in the classroom, allowing students to use facilities and participate in sports activities not of their biological gender, and compliance with federal directives and law regarding gender issues?

Discussion of gender issues has no place in the classroom. These matters are deeply personal and must be addressed by parents and health professionals, just like any other health-related issue. It is contrary to centuries of accumulated scientific knowledge to claim that boys can become girls or girls can become boys. It is also patently unfair to allow biological males to participate in girls’ sports,as it is well established that biological males have a physical advantage over biological females. Furthermore, allowing biological males to use girls’ facilities creates risks of sexual abuse and violates girls’ privacy.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what changes would you want to make, if any, to help ensure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

I believe CMSD’s current policies are effective. The district maintains an adequate number of resource officers. All building entrances are controlled. Staff training and drills are conducted on a prescribed schedule. Every classroom is equipped with emergency bags, and electronic communication during emergencies provides reliable contact with offsite locations.

School Board Meetings

What do you consider to be the appropriate balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

As a school board member, I am elected to represent district taxpayers to ensure the quality of education and the prudent management of district resources. As I am accountable to both taxpayers and parents (who are not always one and the same), it is my duty to listen to concerns raised during regularly scheduled board meetings. District taxpayers and parents have the right to be heard on the issues they view as important and deserving of attention.

Christian voting

Voting is a simple, yet significant way to do something about public policy in our country. As people of faith, we will be held accountable for our actions, as well as our lack of action. (Luke 12:48)

Biblical worldview

By diligently learning, applying, and trusting God’s truths in every area of our lives, we can begin to develop a deep comprehensive faith that will stand against the unrelenting tide of our culture’s non-biblical ideas.

Vote your values

The issues of the day change. Political parties and platforms change. God’s Word never changes. The vote of every Christian should be based on the principles of Scripture and not persuasive personalities.

Electing righteous leaders

Bad governance and our loss of freedom is the direct result of the church’s failure to disciple. When the citizenry do not seek to be obedient to God’s Law, they vote in wicked and corrupt candidates, who then trample underfoot the God-given liberties of the people.
