Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I believe that my role in the school board is to listen to the stake holders to direct my actions. This is not about my agenda, but about what is best for the students, teachers and community.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

As a previous teacher and mother, I understand the struggles of the teachers, students and parents.  The responsibility and control needs to be given to the teachers in each classroom. As long as the staff of the school district know that they are backed by the board, they will perform at their best to do what is best for the students.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

Our strengths lie in our staff and our community. We have amazing people working in the district and we need to continue to work to retain every one of them. We have a strong community that works to help our district and we need to communicate with them to keep them involved.  Getting our facilities back on track is what we need to work towards. Our buildings need to get to a place where we are regularly maintaining them instead of trying to play catch up to major projects.

I would love to see all local families attend our schools, but everyone gets to make their own decisions. Hopefully, the partnership between our district and the local homeschool families continues to grow!

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

Our curricula needs to stay on a facts only basis.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

The students education needs to be the priority. This would include salaries to keep good teachers, safe and secure facilities and good, updated curriculum. Beyond that, we need to listen to the needs of the teachers, students and community for a prioritization list.

Securing Constitutional Liberties

In recent years, established freedoms, including that of speech, peaceable assembly, exercise of religion, and medical autonomy, have been impacted by various mandates adopted by schools across America.  As an elected representative of the citizens of your district, how would you seek to secure the Constitutional liberties of your schools’ students and staff?

We start with teaching the basis of our constitution and we follow what it says. We include the parents and the community. We encourage all stakeholders to attend board meetings and we listen when they wish to speak.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

Parents need to involved in their child’s education. Communication between the schools, teachers and parents is imperative in a child’s academic success.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

Only biological facts should be taught in the schools and the parents must have access to everything that is taught so they can make the decisions as to whether it is appropriate for their child or not. This will also allow for continued conversations to happen at home.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

This is a very personal issue that needs to taken on an as needed basis and communication needs to be very open between the school and the parents.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

We have a great plan for the safety of our students. We need to keep this updated at all times and not get complacent. Secure vestibules at the high school and the elementary school should also be implemented.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

I highly encourage community involvement at all school board meetings. There does need to be time limits in place just to respect every ones time, but their voices deserve to be heard.

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I don’t like the labels of either “Republican” or “Democrat” as there are folks on both sides of the aisle who I think have, and currently are, doing a massive disservice to US taxpayers.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

Most importantly, I am a father to 4 beautiful girls and a husband to an amazing wife. I hold multiple degrees in the field of science with one of them being a MSc. from the Colorado School of Mines. I’m an entrepreneur who’s started multiple businesses including my current position as the President and Director of an industry leading energy tech firm. I’m a former varsity collegiate athlete and help coach the Peyton Panthers 1st and 2nd Grade Flag Football Team.

I believe that the main purpose of public education is to best prepare kids and young adults for successful careers and to be contributing members of society.  PSD’s attention to STEM and CTE is something I fully support.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

My wife and I feel comforted every time we drop our kids off at school because PSD (Peyton School District) cares about protecting their students. I know that there are people in the same building as my children who have the tools and ability to stop a threat wanting to hurt my child. I support the current safety measures that PSD has taken and look forward to continuing that effort by providing whatever resources are needed to ensure safety for our students and staff. My philosophy on school safety is this: the best defense in many cases is a good offense.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

I am a fan of a more classical curriculum and would like to see a stronger influence of that type of learning structure at PSD. As with every other facet of our society, books, magazines, and other material that is not appropriate for young children should not be in our schools. Period.

I would like to add learning material for our students that promotes personal and fiscal responsibility, as well as critical thinking.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

In the short two years I have been on the board at PSD, we have already made significant reductions in administrative costs while increasing earnings for teachers and other staff members. As far as prioritizing taxpayer dollars, I would like to focus on funding expenses that go into direct learning outcomes aimed at reading, writing and arithmetic. I believe that PSD currently holds itself to a fiscally conservative standard, but there are always improvements that can, and should be made.

Removing Constitutional liberties in the name of safety is something that I absolutely oppose. I don’t believe that students or staff at PSD, or any district for that matter, should be forced to comply with government-imposed safety recommendations/mandates. I also believe that people have the right to comply and should not be harassed for doing so.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

I believe that the most critical education that a child will receive first comes from their mother and father. Public or private education is secondary to the influence that parents have on their children. I also believe that parents need to be actively engaged in their child’s public or private education. Parents should know what their children are learning in school.

I find it very hard to find a circumstance where information about a student would need to be withheld from a parent. I expect everything about my child to be disclosed to me and will continue to support other parents who feel the same.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

As I have stated previously, I feel the role of public education is to prepare students to be successful in their career to become a contributing member of society. The topics posed in the question above are topics that I believe should be discussed at home are not appropriate use of taxpayer dollars that are supposed to be spent on reading, writing and arithmetic.

Students certainly have the right to opt out of any ideological course or material that they disagree with. However, there is likely a larger issue at hand if taxpayer dollars are being used to push a controversial ideology in public schools in the first place.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

I do not believe in compelling anyone, especially students, to use specific speech or language that they don’t agree with. Respecting individuals can be done without removing the rights afforded to us by the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

As stated above, I fully support the current safety measures that PSD has taken and look forward to continuing that effort by providing whatever resources are needed to ensure safety for our staff and students. My philosophy on school safety is this: the best defense in many cases is a good offense.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

PSD has very open board meetings and we encourage anyone in the district to attend.

Christian voting

Voting is a simple, yet significant way to do something about public policy in our country. As people of faith, we will be held accountable for our actions, as well as our lack of action. (Luke 12:48)

Biblical worldview

By diligently learning, applying, and trusting God’s truths in every area of our lives, we can begin to develop a deep comprehensive faith that will stand against the unrelenting tide of our culture’s non-biblical ideas.

Vote your values

The issues of the day change. Political parties and platforms change. God’s Word never changes. The vote of every Christian should be based on the principles of Scripture and not persuasive personalities.

Electing righteous leaders

Bad governance and our loss of freedom is the direct result of the church’s failure to disciple. When the citizenry do not seek to be obedient to God’s Law, they vote in wicked and corrupt candidates, who then trample underfoot the God-given liberties of the people.
