Resident of Pikes Peak Region & District:       5 years

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I am Catholic and am fiscally and socially conservative, but I also aspire to be someone who can build coalitions and find points of agreement and mutual understanding with ideological opponents.

I am fiscally conservative because I believe that incentive structures are the most important feature of how any institution operates. I want problems to be resolved at the lowest level of authority and believe that authority and responsibility go hand in hand.

I am socially conservative because I believe that society should prioritize the lowest level of organization: the family. I am the father of five children (one with significant special needs). Public institutions cater to all, but should not attempt to push values or ideologies against parental wishes.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I received my PhD in chemistry from CU – Boulder in 2018 and have taught at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School for the last five years. My time as a graduate student taught me the benefit of rigorous thinking and reminded me that there is no substitute for hard work. My work with students at the Air Force Academy lies at the intersection of teaching and mentorship and I strive every day to live up to being a role model for our future officer corps.

High quality education ultimately comes down to an excellent teaching staff and an administration willing to support them and prioritize academic outcomes.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

District 11 suffers from being centrally located in Colorado Springs and therefore does not readily benefit from new development and expansion. D11 therefore needs to work hard to offer a compelling product to parents as families can easily choose schools in the surrounding districts.

I believe that in the wake of the COVID pandemic and the fallout from ideological conflict, public schools need to work hard to regain the trust of parents and families. School Boards need to make it crystal clear that their job is to optimize academic achievement and work for what is best for students while respecting parental rights.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

School libraries should have a collections policy supporting the learning objectives of the curriculum and contain books appealing to diverse interests to foster a love of reading in all students. Libraries as storehouses of ideas will always be a target for ideological disagreements, and so it is appropriate for parents and the community to have a say in all school policies, particularly ones related to values. I am not convinced that any blanket policy will be able to handle the nuance of adult matters that high-schoolers are exposed to and believe such matters should be handled on a case-by-case basis. School libraries should strive to remove material that appeals to prurient interests.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

One issue that I have heard repeatedly while campaigning is whether or not public schools are acting as wise stewards of taxpayer resources.

Colorado Springs has passed two Mill Levy Overrides in the last few decades and there continues to be a perception from voters that taxpayers are getting little for their money, given D11’s poor standing in state student assessments.

I have little appetite for increasing the burden on taxpayers in Colorado Springs and would prefer to take a hard look at what we are currently getting for our money – and whether there are smarter ways to spend it in pursuit of academic outcomes. I would much prefer to invest in teaching staff, for instance, then technology or administration.

Securing Constitutional Liberties

In recent years, established freedoms, including that of speech, peaceable assembly, exercise of religion, and medical autonomy, have been impacted by various mandates adopted by schools across America.  As an elected representative of the citizens of your district, how would you seek to secure the Constitutional liberties of your schools’ students and staff?

My full-time job is teaching at the USAFA Preparatory School. I vividly remember a briefing on Religious Respect, co-taught by a military lawyer and chaplain, where they pointed out that freedom to practice religion is a right enshrined by the Constitution that service members have fought and died to protect.

While I want public institutions to operate free from ideological pressure, I also want to protect the Constitutional rights of individuals. I also know as a government employee myself that certain rights are voluntarily traded away when working within a public system.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

A parent is the first educator and primary educator of a child until such time as they leave the household. Information about a student should never be withheld from parents.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

It is important to remember that public institutions are dealing with minors who cannot by law consent to sexual activity. As a result, sex education in schools must actively discourage sexual activity to the greatest extent possible. Human sexuality should be taught in biology class, but any value-laden sexual education is best left to parents.

Preferences and beliefs around sexual behavior differ greatly from family to family based on religion, culture, and background. Public institutions should be sensitive to this fact by allowing parents to opt-out of any and all sexual education.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

Beliefs regarding sexuality differ greatly between families due to differences in religion, culture, and background. I am not convinced that public institutions should be discussing gender issues in this way; these matters are best left to families themselves.

As far as preferred pronouns, there is active controversy and wide differences in beliefs among families and staff. I would prefer to avoid coercing speech when possible. Teachers should not be mandated to use specific pronouns nor should institutions be operating without parental knowledge or consent with respect to student identity.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

Parents should be able to leave their children at school with peace of mind and instructors should be confident that they can teach their classes without risking violence or abuse. To that end, schools should be required to develop and train staff in safety and should control access to school grounds, especially with environmental controls. Administration should be prepared to enforce disciplinary policies to maintain a productive learning environment. It is not fair that students who want to learn should suffer due to administrators who are unwilling or unable to maintain a good classroom atmosphere.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

An elected board is ultimately answerable to the public that elected them. School Board meetings should give adequate time for public comment.

By law, School Board directors are not allowed to coordinate outside of the public eye, and therefore meetings need to be productive by facilitating discussion and problem solving. The correct balance to strike here should be sensitive to the needs of public and the needs and interests of parents, the general public, and the needs of the district.

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

School boards are nonpartisan and my personal politics do not matter. I will work to increase the educational experience of all students, parents, and educators.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I am a District 11 alumni, I currently serve at the Mitchell High School School Accountability Committee, I attend District Accountability Committee meetings, the Board meetings, and serve on the the leadership team for Neighbors for Education. I’m well versed on the current state of the district and I bring a unique perspective having attended high school in the last 10 years. My vision is all students have access to resources, are post-secondary ready, and have involved guardians and educators working towards their students success.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

The most prevalent issues in the district are underperformance in achievement and fiscal irresponsibility. The strengths are phenomenal educators and a responsive community. CSSD11 can make public school more attractive by creating an environment that supports all students; cultivates an outstanding educational experience by providing educators and support staff with the resources they need to effectively teach; and increasing parent involvement.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

I think the curriculum should adhere to the standards set by the Colorado Department of Education.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

Funds come from public tax dollars, it is mandatory to be transparent about expenditures; every expense should be made to better the educational experience of students in the district, as dictated by members of the community.

I believe in the Constitution and the freedoms expressed in the Bill of Rights and would protect them as such.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

Every parent/guardian has expansive rights in their child’s education and I would encourage every parent to get involved at their child’s school.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

I support comprehensive sexual education in public schools, as determined by the Colorado Department of Education.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

Gender issues should be taught and discussed as a facet of creating a safe environment for all students, including the use of preferred pronouns. If a student doesn’t want to give pronouns, they shouldn’t be required.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

I would seek to implement a public health, evidence-based approach to school safety.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

As elected officials, our authority is derived from the consent of the governed. Public comment should be sought and celebrated.

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I am running for reelection to the School Board because I support programs and policies that assist and help people in our community. I stand for students and the schools, and believe nonpartisan races should remain that way.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

Having served on the Board for the last 4 years, I’m aware of the unique challenges facing our district, from janitor and bus driver vacancies to necessary infrastructural improvements. My vision for high-quality education is to bring the tax dollars closer to the classroom and to retain and hire certified teachers, not to inflate administration positions.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

D11’s primary strength is that we take all students. Regardless of who they are or where they live, we do not discriminate. Our biggest weakness is a lack of consistent and sustainable funding. In my next 4 years, I’d like to build partnerships between parents, teachers, and the community to increase cohesion and work with legislators to increase funding sources.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

Parents and the public are welcome to review the curriculum and submit those questions and concerns. District 11 has policies and procedures in place whereby the community can address any concerns regarding curriculum and the content it covers. The District has always followed those procedures and I support following those regarding any school materials.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

I will prioritize school funding according to the recommendations set forth by the executive team. Those decisions are made by contracted professionals in cooperation with the Superintendent. I support policies that put tax dollars closer to the students in schools.

I support the Constitution and will follow it as a School Board Member.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

A parent’s role in education is to support their students, partner with teachers and administration, and help teachers understand their students better for more success throughout the entire K-12 experience. Teachers should share information to parents about their students in accordance with confidentiality laws that are in place to protect student-teacher communications.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

D11 has always taught comprehensive, age-appropriate sexual education to middle and high schoolers. Parents have the right to opt their students in or out from participation in these classes. Parents should have the opportunity to make those decisions for their individual student.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

I follow the District 11 policies and procedures around preferred pronouns.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

The District stays privy to current affairs, seeking the most appropriate response protocols for the safety of staff, students, and the community at-large. The District is always innovating to streamline communication and keep everyone informed and safe through calls, emails, and texts to parents regarding critical school updates.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

We need to streamline communication structures that allow for more public input surrounding the School Board.

JILL HAFFLEY

Email Address:       Jill4dD11@gmail.com

Occupation/Vocation:       Retired Teacher

Resident of Pikes Peak Region & District:       45 years and 24 years (with 3 years in Woodland Park)

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I am a Christian conservative. I have a deep respect for the traditions of freedom in the United States and our Constitution.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I am a recently retired 30-year high school teaching veteran, 27 of which I spent as a U.S. History teacher in D11. I believe school boards ought to have big goals, and to accomplish those goals it is pivotal to have the perspective of someone who was actually in the classroom on the school board.  It’s important for school boards to know what happens in the classroom on a regular basis and how their policies are impacting individual students.

My vision and priorities are threefold: ensure fiscal responsibility, promote academic excellence, and strengthen community engagement.

Overall – my vision is that students have the best resources available to them on an individual level to best meet their individual needs.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

Strengths: D11 has a tight knit and engaged parent community, and highly qualified educators. I believe that the relationship between the district and its families is strong and getting stronger.

Weaknesses: Overall, student outcomes are poor. Our academics, while improving, need to be significantly better for our kids. But even beyond that, many students are apathetic, unfocused, and struggle with behavioral issues. I believe the district can and must do a better job improving student outcomes across the board.

D11 should continue its current trajectory toward improving academic achievement and community.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

Curriculum and library books should be high quality and age appropriate. Pornographic content has no place in our schools.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

I would ensure that money is as closely tied to the needs of individual students as possible.

One of the roles of the school board is to keep kids and staff safe, but boards must stay in their lane.  Mandates are not acceptable, in my opinion. I have a deep appreciation for our Constitution – I taught

it for 27 of my 30 years in the classroom. The Constitution must be followed.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

Students whose parents stay involved in school have better attendance and behavior, get better grades, demonstrate better social skills and adapt better to school. I believe parental involvement more securely sets students up to develop a lifelong love of learning.

When this happens, the motivation, behavior and academic performance of all children at a particular school improve. Simply put, the better the partnership between school and home, the better the school and the higher the student achievement across the board.

I do not believe it is the place of the school to keep information from parents, unless there is a direct threat to a student’s safety. If that is the case, there are safeguards already in place for that.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

Sexuality education in a public school must be age appropriate, abstinence based, and biologically focused. School districts must be transparent to parents and community members about what curriculum is being used in their schools. Parents have every right to opt their child out of anything they deem inappropriate.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

A school’s charge is to teach reading, writing, math, English, history, the arts, and other academic subjects. It is not to venture into areas related to personal beliefs and identity. Teachers have the right to refer to students according to the pronouns corresponding to the student’s biological sex at birth.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

I would continue the progress D11 is making to keep students and staff protected by armed SROs and have safe infrastructure in terms of access to the school.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

The public is entitled to attend meetings of public bodies because our democratic-republic depends on openness and transparency. Board meetings should be conducted orderly, in accordance with the rules, to best hear the views of the community. Public comments cannot be limited in a manner that is viewpoint-restrictive or discriminatory. A speaker’s opinion should not be limited, but the school board can limit the speaker’s topic to the business before the board.

Occupation/Vocation:       Public Education / Airforce Air National Guard

Military Background:       Airforce/Colorado Air National Guard – Current

Resident of Pikes Peak Region & District:       13 years

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

My political ideologies are complex. Fiscally I am conservative and appreciate every dollar of tax payer money sent to local, state and federal government. I believe in a smaller high functioning government body. Socially I believe in the power of our Constitution and defend the rights afforded to all Americans. I feel strongly that we have an obligation to fund social structures such as Police, Fire, Emergency Services, Schools, and Libraries.

The right to a high quality free public education is a pillar of our nation.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I have held several positions on boards locally. I have been a multi term President of a local HOA consisting of 136 homes. During my time the Bluffs board i worked to bring our community together. I strived to lead a construction neighbor oriented organization rather than a punitive body. I have been elected to several terms as President of the Colorado Springs Association of School Executives. During my time on the CSASE board I have worked with all District stake holders on behalf of building and department leaders to improve the District wherever possible. I served on the board of the American Legion Riders of Post 209 as our Veterans deserve our support.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

We have lost our ability to locally transport all students. We need to work with our transportation department to ensure available buses for all families and adequate staffing to accommodate those needs. We must have excellent academic instruction at all levels and in every classroom. That means staff development must be a priority.

If we can provide safe effective efficient transportation and best first instruction at every level in every classroom District Eleven has the ability to become the highest quality educational institution in Colorado.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

I support full access to all age appropriate educational reading materials for our students. I do not believe in book burning or banning, but we must ensure that our libraries are age appropriate and safe for all students.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

Funding must be directed towards School Safety and Academic Rigor. Those will by my guiding principles.

The Constitution is the founding ideals and freedoms of our nation. That is why i swore an oath to defend it from threats both foreign and domestic.

This is a simple matter of protecting or enacting policy that reflects these protections for all.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

No. There is no situation that information should be withheld from a parent. In the cases of child abuse or neglect the sharing of information regarding a court order is still appropriate.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

I believe that a well rounded biology curriculum is part of a quality public education. As was the case when I was a student many years ago, a parent should have the right to opt their children out of that curriculum.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

Part of supporting the constitution is supporting the right to free speech. We don’t get to decide what speech is protected, its all or none. I support an educators right to educate children. That said, I believe this issue is one that should be addressed at home with family as a social issue.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

Highly trained armed security. Sound security practices such as lock down drills and always keeping exterior doors locked. Random intrusion tests by members of security or volunteers from our local police and sheriffs departments. Practice makes perfect. Don’t drill until you get it right, drill until you cant get it wrong.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

I feel many of these questions surround the protection of the 1st Amendment. Be assured, all have a right to freedom of speech. We have a right to peaceably assemble and everyone benefits from intentional, thoughtful discourse.

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I am a Christian conservative. I believe capitalism is the system that made America and many other countries around the world prosperous and thus will promote socially and fiscally responsible management of funds that I manage on behalf of my constituents. As a first generation college graduate and business owner, I see the American dream working in my own life and countless others. We should be grateful for the opportunities our country allows every individual and encourage all young people to be victors and not victims of their circumstances.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

In my four years as a school board member, I have seen what works and what doesn’t. In 2019, I was in the minority as the school board prioritized political ideology, mishandled COVID-19 with overly strict restrictions, and academics continued to decline. In 2021, a new school board majority was elected that put student outcomes first. We hired a new superintendent that prioritized academic achievement, and put in a variety of reforms that have put D11 on a strong trajectory for the future. In that short time, D11 academics improved from 158th of 178 school districts to 79th! I will continue to build upon the success of the past two years once re-elected.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

Our strengths in D11 are the quality neighborhood schools that so many of us enjoy! Unfortunately, this is also our weakness as we look ahead to the district’s demographics and under-utilized buildings in some parts of our community. While we have more to do in making D11 more attractive, we are finally on the right path with academics, enrollment, and leadership to take D11 back to the top!

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

Curriculum should be fact based and convey respect for our nation’s history and pornographic content has no place in our libraries. In handling objectionable I propose one of the following:, either a special section to house these books behind a parent authorized section of our libraries. And for particularly abhorrent content, simply choose to not house these books in our schools.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

Our board spent close to 20 hours of the past two years in reviewing the D11 budget. Line item by line item, we determined the validity, purpose, and measurable outcomes that would be obtained by spending each budget item. In my first term, we terminated the continuation of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office and re-allocated those funds to better compensate our school security officers, who keep our students safe. Through that reform and many others, we ensured that every dollar was put toward improving student outcomes. If re-elected, I would maintain that scrutiny and commitment on the next board.

The constitution must be respected. Our board would renew an emphasis on these liberties, reviewing policy and procedures to ensure that our students, staff, and community are able to enjoy these to the fullest extent possible through our constitution.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

We as the current board recently passed a new policy, The Parent Promise, that enshrined and rejuvenated the strong roles our parents and guardians have in their students’ lives. We must remember and respect that parents and guardians entrust their students to us for the sole purpose of educating their child, and nothing more. Anything that pertains to a student’s education and well-being in our buildings and campuses should be transparent to the parent and guardian to build and retain trust in our school systems.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

As a former science teacher, who covered human anatomy with my 7th graders, there is a place for age-appropriate and biological education of what is the amazing human body. The key here is that curriculum is biologically accurate. Any curriculum or education beyond this should allow for a parent opt-out, or depending on the appropriateness, parent opt-in. In either case parents would have the ability to review the curriculum and teacher material ahead of time.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

Since enacted in 1984, The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) is a federal law that actually protects this area and other personal information from being discussed and/or solicited in the classroom. Teachers by law, should not be asking, requiring or promoting the discussion of student sexuality under these federal protections. If a student and their parent/guardian has clearly communicated a gender identity or pronoun different than their birth certificate or school record, then that should be discussed on a case-by-case basis as these instances are rare in our classrooms.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

Our current board has already earmarked $11 million to construct great safety enhancements in our schools at their entrance sites. I’d like us to further see School resource officers (SRO’s) and our own armed security officers to be present and protecting our students and staff at every one of our facilities. This comes as an increased cost in training, insurance and annual compliance/compensation to our district, a small cost to pay to provide and enshrine safety in every one of our classrooms.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

School boards are elected by the voting public of that community, and as such are responsible to hear from their constituents as often as available for public comment during school board meetings or through other means of communications with these elected officials. As such, the public should be open to present their views, accolades, and concerns with the board (assuming proper decorum of the board room is maintained), even if discussing challenging topics for our district.

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I am a proud U.S citizen, a Christian, a fiscal conservative, and a supporter of free market capitalism. As an immigrant from India with limited means, I have appreciated the many blessings America offered through access to a well-rounded education. I believe that education is the great equalizer which opens doors of opportunity and success for our children and future generations.

During my first term on the school board, my commitment was to ensure every student had opportunities and supports to grow, thrive, and reach their full academic potential in a safe and welcoming school environment. If re-elected, I will continue to put students first and prioritize their educational outcomes in all critical decisions.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I am an enthusiastic D11 father, active parent volunteer, and an experienced school board director cognizant of the strengths and challenges facing public education. During my first term on the school board, I served as the Treasurer (2019-2021) and President (2021-current). I am passionate about public education and have a proven track record in improving student outcomes, staff supports, and parent engagement.

My vision for D11 is to continue to restore excellence in education. It is our moral obligation to ensure every child is proficient in reading, writing, and math – skills that will prepare them for success after graduation. To help achieve that goal, I will continue to advocate for a culture of high expectations and accountability at all levels.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

District 11 is steeped in rich traditions and bursting with a culturally diverse student community. The district is as old as the city and is rooted in excellence since its inception. It offers a wide array of programs and services, including the most pre-K openings and opportunities for high school students to find their excellence though college credits and industry certifications.

Despite significant progress over the last year, data shows that 70% of D11 students are not grade level proficient. Those are sobering and unacceptable statistics that must be addressed with urgency and intentionality. By restoring the focus on excellence in education for all students and competitive staff investments, D11 will become the premier destination of choice in this region.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

K-12 curriculum should be rigorous in developing fundamental knowledge and skills, while having the flexibility to differentiate and support the unique learning needs of every student. It should be designed to enable students to meet or exceed grade level academic standards, as well as achieve measurable student outcomes. Curriculum must be rooted in facts, be unbiased, and teach students how to think and not what to think. All curriculum, including library books, must be age appropriate. It is vital that parents have a voice in their child’s education. As such, all curriculum and library materials should be available for public review through a fully transparent process.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

In order to earn the trust and confidence of the community, it is crucial that school boards are responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. During my first term, I prioritized investing D11’s limited financial resources closest to students in the classrooms. As a consequence, the Board was able to deliver historic pay raises for all our staff, including increasing starting teacher salary by over 20%. The board also approved better healthcare plan with increased benefits and cost-savings to all employees. Starting this year, every D11 graduate will receive a full-ride scholarship to Pikes Peak State College. I will continue to put the interests of students and staff at the forefront of all critical budgetary decisions.

I fully support the Constitutional liberties of our students and staff. Through policy and governance, I will ensure those liberties are protected.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

I believe that parents are the child’s first and most important teacher, and as such are essential partners in their K-12 education. Parental involvement in schools is a catalyst for improving academic growth and achievement. As the Board President, I championed Parent Partnership which the board adopted as a foundational board policy that recognizes parental authority and the importance of parental involvement in schools. Consequently, parents now have a clear voice and choice in their child’s education. Except in cases of abuse, I do not believe student information should be withheld from parents.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

Age appropriate sex education should be solely based on biology and health. All other conversations and decisions pertaining to sex/gender ideologies should be left for parents to discuss with their child in the privacy of their home environment. In my first term, the Board changed policy to ensure that surveys which ask students sexual and suggestive questions will not be administered by schools without the explicit consent of parents. All curriculum should be available for parent review through a fully transparent process.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

As I stated previously, all conversations pertaining to sex/gender ideologies should be left for parents to discuss with their child in the privacy of their home environment, and not in the classroom. I am committed to fostering a safe and welcoming school culture in which all students feel valued and respected. No student should be subjected to bullying, threats, and/or harassment of any kind on a school campus.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

Safety of our students and staff is of paramount importance bar none. As a board member, I supported a comprehensive security audit of our schools and approved the allocation of $11 million to secure our school entryways. The board also approved significant pay raises to our campus security officers, thereby ensuring we are recognizing and rewarding their commitment to keeping our campuses safe. I am supportive of working with the city to hire more School Resource Officers to keep every school secure. I am committed to ensuring our campuses are free of drugs, while providing our officers with the necessary tools to combat life-threatening situations.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

I support the freedom of speech and the public’s right to express their views in a respectful and civil manner. As an elected representative, I am committed to serving all of District 11. Consequently, I am committed to listening respectfully, weighing all input objectively, and focusing on student-centered solutions.

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

In a non partisan School Board election, candidates are not officially associated with any specific political party and it should stay this way. In order for the school board to function as a unit, political leanings or parties should not be a part of board business. Always do what is right for students.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I have been a part of public education for 34 years. I have been a special education teacher, principal and coach. I currently work with the Department of Education to train principals to observe teachers and give feedback that focuses on growth. The highest quality education comes from having the best teachers possible. I believe my experience and proven leadership will by my strongest contribution to the District 11 board.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

District 11 is challenged in much the same way as many schools in Colorado. Recruiting and retaining teachers is the challenge facing these districts. We have to be able to hire quality teachers and retain quality teachers. We can do this by competitive pay and also by supporting teachers as they do the very toughest and most important job.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

District policies should be followed when schools make choices about curricula and library books. Solid policies are currently in place and should be the guide for these types of decisions.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

I would assess the needs of the district considering enrollment, infrastructure and educational programs. I would help create a comprehensive budget that outlines all resources. I will engage with stakeholders to identify priorities. I will ensure that funds are distributed in a fair way and address all disparities. Budget decisions are tough ones and it is important for the board to work together as a team and listen to the stakeholders in the district.

Securing constitutional liberties in schools is a balance between protecting individual rights and maintaining a safe and productive learning environment. We must keep this in the forefront when faced with issues such as, conflict resolution, promoting inclusivity, bullying and harassment, accommodating disabilities and freedom of press among other things.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

Parents as partners with schools is their most important role. Students thrive when schools and parents work together for the betterment of education. Parental engagement is key to success for students.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

All of these issues are covered by current district policy and these policies should be followed when making these decisions. Parents have always been able to opt their students out of any part of their current school’s curriculum and that should continue.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

We should follow state standards and guidelines regarding these issues. Students should be respected and accepted for who they are and it should not be impacted by national political agendas.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

As board members we are responsible to make sure policies are in place that assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff all across the district. The district has recently performed a safety audit and has begun updating facilities to make them safer (like adequate signage and lighting). Many of these depend on funding. I believe that student and staff safety is a priority for funding.

School Board Meetings

What do believe is the correct balance between the authority of School Boards and the rights of the public to present their views during School Board meetings?

All voices and stakeholders have the right to express their support or displeasure with things happening in the district. Board members should listen to and consider what is being said by these groups of stakeholders.

Political Leanings

As a candidate in the Colorado Springs nonpartisan municipal election, you are not officially associated with any specific political party. How would you describe your political leanings (socially, fiscally, etc.) and why do you define yourself in this way?

I am fighting to keep politics out of our education system, and I therefore believe political leanings have no place in this race. I am pro public education and pro-ensuring our children have the knowledge and skills they need to be successful and contribute to our community.

Your Experience and Vision

What experience (personal, professional, other) would you bring to your role as School Board Member that will benefit your district?  What is your vision to help ensure the highest quality education for your district’s students?

I have spent the majority of my professional career working as a journalist, seeking to cover news stories without bias and with the best information available. I will use that same fact-based and informed approach to make policies for D11. I will work to build an education system that benefits all students.

Improving Schools

What are the primary strengths and weaknesses of your district’s schools?  How can your district make public school a more attractive choice for local families?

The primary strength of D11 are the resources, wealth of knowledge, and talented individuals that we have at our disposal to teach our children. At the same time, our primary weakness is the mismanagement and failure to capitalize on these. We must utilize them properly and not focus our attention on unrelated matters like the current School Board has. The more we focus on the core values associated with education and improve student outcomes, the more attractive our district will be to local families.

Curriculum

What types of curricula, including library books and materials, do you believe should be added or removed from your district’s schools?  Why?

D11 should ensure its curricula are up-to-date and in line with best practice, and that its materials–including books–contain information and viewpoints that enrich their education and make them well-rounded citizens. These materials should not only provide the information these students need to pass their exams, but also offer material that enhances their critical thinking and holistic understanding of the world.

Financial Stewardship

Depending on the size of their district, School Board Members decide how to spend $10s of millions of dollars, or even $100s of millions, in taxpayer money each year.  How would you seek to prioritize the funds being stewarded by your district’s School Board?

I will prioritize the funds in a manner that maximizes student outcomes and preparedness. This entails seeking and considering the recommendations of professionals with a track record of building solid programs and curricula, while at the same time ensuring the views of parents and citizens alike are taken into account.

I will rely on established norms and procedures to ensure the School Board does not violate individuals’ Constitutional rights.

Parental Role

What do you consider to be a parent’s role in a child’s education?  Do you believe that any information about a student should ever be withheld from a parent?

Parents play a vital role in their children’s education. The school system is most effective when parents, teachers, and administrators are aligned in their goals. With that in mind, I believe teachers should be free to relay information to parents provided they do not violate any confidentiality laws.

Sex Ed

Why do you support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?  What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-out policies?

D11 already has an age-appropriate sexual education curriculum and parents are free to opt their students out of it. I believe this structure should remain in place.

Gender Issues

Explain your positions regarding teaching and discussing gender issues in the classroom, including the use of “preferred pronouns”?

The topic of gender issues has largely become a political issue used to distract voters from the gaps in our education system. I will focus my attention on ensuring academic success.

School Safety

As a School Board member, what will you do to help assure a safe and secure environment for both the students and staff of your district?

Students should learn in a safe and secure environment, and teachers should be able to perform their duties without fear. I will work with students, teachers, parents, and administrators to understand the gaps in our current system and work alongside experts in the field to create a safe learning environment.

Christian voting

Voting is a simple, yet significant way to do something about public policy in our country. As people of faith, we will be held accountable for our actions, as well as our lack of action. (Luke 12:48)

Biblical worldview

By diligently learning, applying, and trusting God’s truths in every area of our lives, we can begin to develop a deep comprehensive faith that will stand against the unrelenting tide of our culture’s non-biblical ideas.

Vote your values

The issues of the day change. Political parties and platforms change. God’s Word never changes. The vote of every Christian should be based on the principles of Scripture and not persuasive personalities.

Electing righteous leaders

Bad governance and our loss of freedom is the direct result of the church’s failure to disciple. When the citizenry do not seek to be obedient to God’s Law, they vote in wicked and corrupt candidates, who then trample underfoot the God-given liberties of the people.
